Full-Grain, Museum Calf, and Nubuck: Understanding Leather Types

Full-grain calfskin is the least processed and most durable leather we offer — the natural grain is left fully intact, meaning it develops a rich patina over years of wear.

Museum calf undergoes a hand-applied patina finish that creates subtle tonal variation, deepening toward the toe and heel. It is the leather most associated with high-end Italian and Northamptonshire shoemaking.

Nubuck is full-grain leather that has been lightly buffed on the surface for a soft, velvet-like texture — a more casual finish, best suited to Chelsea boots and Derbies.

Suede, by contrast, is buffed on the flesh side of the hide rather than the grain side, giving it a deeper nap and a more matte, casual character — ideal for Belgian and tassel loafers worn without a tie.
