Oxford vs. Derby: A Style Guide for Formal Footwear
Nigar Guliyeva · February 19, 2026 · 4 min read
The distinction between an Oxford and a Derby comes down to one construction detail: how the lacing panels attach to the vamp. On an Oxford, the eyelet facings are stitched underneath the vamp for a closed, seamless line — the most formal silhouette in menswear.
On a Derby, the facings are stitched on top, creating an open construction that offers more room to adjust for higher insteps and a slightly more casual read.
As a rule: Oxfords for black tie, weddings, and formal business. Derbies for everything from smart-casual tailoring to raw denim. When in doubt, a plain-toe Derby in dark brown museum calf is the most versatile single pair a wardrobe can own.
